Shift Happens

I've been reading a lot about globalization and the flattening of the world lately.  (Actually just made it through Thomas Friedman's "The World is Flat - A Brief History of the 21st Century"), and there are some things happening these days that are just amazing.

If you have 5 minutes, take a look at this really cool presentation that throws a ton of interesting thoughts at you all at once.  Each will make you think.

Enjoy.  (Thanks to Zav for the link.)

A New Insult for the Workplace - "You're Such an Eeyore"

Love this post on Lifehack today called "Don't be an Eeyore".  It's about all the ways we manufacture unhappiness in our lives, and simultaneously suck the happiness out of others when we're not even realizing it.

My favorite part:

"How many time a day do you tell people how tired you are? How often do you say “I’m bored”? When you screw something up, do you tell people around you how stupid you are? Is “I can’t complain” the best response you can come up with to “how are you?  For some reason, we feel obligated to undermine ourselves as part of our normal conversation routines. Well, stop. If you’re really tired, bored, or stupid, you’re doing something wrong and need to have a long conversation with yourself — maybe you’re in a bad job, a bad relationship, a bad place in your life. But usually, we’re just passing time — do so with something positive instead. Tell people how excited you are about whatever you’re working on — excitement and energy are contagious and who knows? You might even catch some of it back. "

So true, so true, isn't it?

(Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go take a nap.  I'm not tired, I'm just really excited to sleep...:)

Learning From Mistakes

The Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience just published a study that claims to have pinpointed the area of the brain that learns from mistakes.  More specifically, that alerts us in less than a second of an impending mistake, so we don't make it again.

(Wonder if they can do a follow up study on the part of the brain that ignores these alerts whenever chocolate, or shots of Jagermeister are involved.)
